We’re excited to unveil the next of our featured Fellows who will join Jose Campos in the Surviving The Law LIVE! webinar on September 25th, 2025 at 7:00 PM ET

Dr. Rafael A. Martínez self-identifies as an undocuscholar, which he defines as: individuals who are conducting research, writing, documenting, producing artwork, and developing public projects from the lived experiences of being undocumented or formerly undocumented.
At Arizona State University (ASU) he is an assistant professor of Southwest Borderlands and the Co-Director of the newly launched, Latinx Oral History Lab. Dr. Martínez’s work focuses on immigrant rights, mixed-status families, and Latinx cultural and historical productions in the southwest borderlands.
Dr. Martínez’s book with the University of Arizona Press, Illegalized: Undocumented Youth Movements in the United States, analyzes the rise of Undocumented Youth Social Movements in the U.S. and immigrant youth’s contributions to the broader Immigrant Rights Movements.
When Surviving The Law was published, Martínez chose to remain anonymous. But now, at Surviving The Law LIVE!, he will publicly reclaim his story. For the first time, audiences will hear directly from the man behind the pseudonym, as he reflects on what it means to move from invisibility to visibility and why he continues to fight for students walking the path he once did.
The webinar will feature Martínez, author and immigration attorney Jose Campos, and several other Fellows, each offering powerful insights on navigating higher education while undocumented.
